Summer’s Gone
J . SmetanaYou don’t have to cry at night, so long goodbye
You don’t understand my way, my heart, my plan
You don’t want to know my pain, my love, my soul
You don’t have to go so far, like the fool you areYou waste away endless summer days
Out on the beach you’re out of reach
And now the leaves are turning right before your eyes
Gold and crimson just like all your liesBut you don’t have to cry at night, so long goodbye
You don’t understand my way, my heart, my planThe tide comes in on summer skin
I watch you burn, you never learn
Cold autumn wind is blowing softly on your face
It carries you away without a traceYou don’t have to cry at night, so long goodbye
You don’t understand my way, my heart, my plan
Summer’s gone...Seasons come and go forever changing with the sun
Fading just as soon as we’ve begun
Falling backwards, falling forwards like a bullet from a gun
Keeps me looking out for number oneYou don’t have to cry at night, so long goodbye
You don’t understand my way, my heart, my plan
You don’t want to know my pain, my love, my soul
You don’t have to go so far, like the fool you are
*Summer’s Gone- "This a song about lost opportunity. When you are young you think that time is a luxury and that things will always just be there for you. But time is linear, you can’t go back and undo things or get back lost moments. We can sort of sit on the beach and be hypnotized by the pulse of the waves and wind, but meanwhile the earth turns, the tides ebb and flow and life is measured off bit by bit. We ignore the larger picture. The narrator is someone watching a loved one drift and then fall into regret at having missed out on things. You can’t cry about it or argue with God. It’s our own fault when we forget what matters. The production rocks pretty good. I love the drums and the backwards swell that starts each chorus. It’s a sound of acceleration, like life revving itself up and passing you by. The guitar part on the verse was recorded through a little 20-watt amp lying facedown on the strings of a grand piano, giving it a metallic resonance. Cool stuff. I like Jeffrey’s Scorpions-type harmonizing on the leads."- Jeff
